In Turkmen culture 'Ensi' rugs served as a door entrance covering for the yurt felt tent marked by its directional design. Obviously not as an every day purpose the rug would have been brought out for some special occasion of purpose e.g. betrothal or special guest. After Moscovite and English contact these became made commercially for the bazaar in increased sizes. Our authentic example here comes from an earlier period and was intended for its original purpose.
